Historic Market Square
Historic Market Square packs more than 100 locally owned shops and food businesses into three pedestrian blocks filled with papel picado, storefront displays, music, and public events. The market is still a place to eat and shop, which is why its history feels present without needing a display case. The site's public-market lineage reaches back to a plaza granted to San Antonio's first settlers in 1730. Vendors later shifted west as the city reorganized its central plazas. Mexican, European, Middle Eastern, and Asian immigrant businesses shaped the market, and merchants resisted decline and threatened demolition after produce wholesalers moved away during World War II. A 1976 rebuild created the current pedestrian malls while preserving active commerce.Individual merchants set their own hours, and event schedules change throughout the year. The City's published calendar is more reliable than a single weekly schedule for the whole district. Crowds, music, and temporary street closures can increase during festival weekends.
