Mission San Jose
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was the largest of San Antonio's Spanish missions. A major Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s reconstructed much of the compound's earlier plan, so the grounds still show the scale of a mission community rather than only a church. The limestone church remains an active parish. Around it are family quarters, soldier quarters, the convento, granary, grist mill, workshops, irrigation features, and a broad central plaza. The NPS visitor center adds a free film and current ranger information. Together, the buildings explain how missions organized religion, labor, land, and Indigenous life under Spanish colonial rule. The compound and visitor center are free. Daily ranger walks are scheduled at 10:00 and 11:00 when staffing and weather allow, and the visitor desk may close for lunch. Church services can limit entry. Much of the visit is outdoors on exposed ground.
