The Alamo
Mission San Antonio de Valero was founded in 1718 and moved to its current site in 1724, more than a century before the 1836 battle. The Church and Long Barrack survive from the mission era, and the grounds now cover the site's longer life as a Spanish colonial mission, military post, commercial district, memorial, archaeological site, and active preservation project. The Wall of History and site models show how much larger the compound once was than the familiar church facade. The newer Collections Center displays artifacts connected to the mission and battle, while outdoor spaces reveal ongoing archaeology and restoration work. The mission's history includes Indigenous people whose lives were reshaped by Spanish colonial power.Church admission is free with a timed reservation. Tours, audio experiences, and the Collections Center use separate tickets or terms. Most of the site is outdoors, no visitor parking is provided at the Alamo, and construction can change entrances or walking routes. The Church and grounds stop entry 15 minutes before closing.
