Kimbell Art Museum

Watch daylight become part of the collection. The Kimbell's permanent collection is deliberately small—around 350 works across antiquities, European art, Asia, Africa and Oceania, and the ancient Americas. Louis I. Kahn's 1972 building gives those objects cycloid vaults and a system of skylights and reflectors that makes natural light subtly change across the day. Renzo Piano's 2013 pavilion answers across the lawn with glass, concrete, wood, and spaces for exhibitions and education.Spend time with a few works, then compare how the two buildings handle weight, light, entry, and quiet. Admission to the permanent collection is always free; special exhibitions are ticketed separately. Photography is generally noncommercial, nonflash, and subject to object-level restrictions. Guided architecture and collection tours require the current schedule or advance booking. Most of the campus is accessible, but the Kahn Building's west entrance is not; use the accessible east entrance on Van Cliburn Way.
