National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame
Move the women of the West to the center. The museum began in 1975 in the basement of the Deaf Smith County Library in Hereford, moved to Fort Worth in 1994, and opened its current building in 2002. Its archives hold more than 4,000 artifacts and information about more than 750 women. Honorees cross ranching, rodeo, art, writing, education, activism, business, entertainment, and public service, turning cowgirl into a much larger category than costume or competition.Look for both celebration and revision. The museum explicitly says it has made progress identifying Black, Indigenous, and other women of color for the Hall of Fame—and that more work remains. That admission matters: a hall is not simply a mirror of history but a living decision about recognition. A 16,000-square-foot expansion is underway with a public grand opening scheduled for November 7, 2026, so entrance routes and galleries may differ during construction.
