Garden of the Phoenix
History survives here by changing shape. On Wooded Island, Japan's Ho-o-den—often called the Phoenix Pavilion—opened for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and was left to Chicago as a place to encounter Japanese culture. The pavilion burned in 1946, but the garden endured and was repeatedly renewed, carrying a long civic relationship forward through water, stone, pine, bridge, and carefully framed views.Walk the winding path slowly. Cross the wooden footbridge, look back across the lagoon, and notice how each turn hides one scene before revealing another. This is not a generic quiet corner: its beauty is inseparable from more than a century of exchange, loss, repair, and stewardship between Chicago and Japan.Chicago Park District currently lists the Osaka Garden facility open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., and closed Monday. Stay on designated paths, respect gates and plantings, and expect adjacent Jackson Park construction or special events to alter the approach. Programs, parking, and nearby attractions are separate from this draft Pass.
