Promontory Point
Chicago's shoreline becomes a room at Promontory Point. Limestone steps meet Lake Michigan while lawns, trees, fire circles, and a 1930s fieldhouse gather around them. Landscape architect Alfred Caldwell shaped the Point as a naturalistic place within Burnham Park, turning a hard engineered edge into one of the South Side's most memorable public horizons.Choose a place to sit before you reach for the skyline photo. Look north to see downtown compressed by distance, then back toward the trees and fieldhouse to notice how the landscape makes the lake feel communal rather than monumental. That balance—open water, built stone, and shared ground—is why the Point matters to Chicago's Public Shore. The park is generally open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Waves, spray, ice, darkness, and wet limestone can make the edge hazardous; obey closures and posted rules, and do not treat the stepped revetment as guaranteed swimming access. Fieldhouse rooms, events, parking, and any programmed activity are separate from this draft Pass.
