Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

Los Peñasquitos Canyon stretches about seven miles across 4,000 acres in northern San Diego. A year-round stream passes oak and sycamore groves, freshwater marsh, and more than 14 habitat types before reaching a small waterfall over volcanic rock. The preserve records more than 500 plant species and over 175 kinds of birds.Native American history in the canyon dates back at least 7,000 years. The east end also contains the restored Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos Adobe, built around 1823 during the Mexican period. Rain can flood crossings and close damaged trails, while heat makes the long distances more demanding. The City posts current trail status through the ranger office.
