Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Torrey Pines protects the rarest pine tree in the United States. Pinus torreyana now grows naturally only here and on Santa Rosa Island. Trails run through wind-shaped trees, deep ravines, and high coastal bluffs above the Pacific. The reserve also protects one of Southern California’s last salt marshes and waterfowl refuges.Only 16 California state park units have natural-reserve status, so rules are stricter than at a general recreation park. Picnicking, camping, and dogs are prohibited. Gates open at 7:15 a.m. and close at sunset, and parking is paid. The visitor center occupies a 1923 pueblo-style building and is generally open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trails and facilities can close for erosion, maintenance, or weather.
