Cabrillo National Monument
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse first shone in 1855 from 422 feet above sea level. The headland puts San Diego Bay on one side and the Pacific on the other, with exhibits on the lighthouse, coastal defense, and the 1542 Spanish expedition associated with Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Kumeyaay people lived along this coast long before that voyage, and Point Loma remains part of their homeland.Rocky tidepools lie below the main monument. The main park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Bayside and Oceanside trails close at 4 p.m.; the coastal area and tidepools close at 4:30. Low tides can draw enough traffic to close the tidepool road temporarily. Cell service is unavailable by the tidepools, and wet rock is slippery.
