Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Isabella Stewart Gardner opened this museum in 1903 under the name Fenway Court. She placed paintings, sculpture, furniture, textiles, and architectural fragments throughout a Venetian-style palace built around a four-story courtyard. Her will instructed the museum to make no permanent changes to the displays.Thieves disguised as police officers stole thirteen works in 1990, including paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Manet. The case remains unsolved, and empty frames still mark several of the missing works. Admission is paid, tickets can sell out, and Tuesday is the museum's regular closed day. Thursday hours extend into the evening except when holidays or events change the schedule.
