Old North Church

Two lanterns shone from Old North Church's steeple on the night of April 18, 1775. Robert Newman and John Pulling carried them up the tower to warn that British troops were crossing the Charles River toward Lexington and Concord. Built in 1723, Old North remains Boston's oldest standing church building and an active Episcopal congregation. The sanctuary still has its box pews, 1759 organ, and upper gallery. Enslaved people, servants, and free Black congregants were made to sit in that gallery while wealthy families owned pews below. The current Discovery Pass includes the sanctuary, crypt, exhibit, audio guide, and family scavenger hunt. Bell chamber tours add the room where Paul Revere rang bells as a teenager and require two sets of steep stairs.
