Historic Fourth Ward Park
The lake looks ornamental. It is actually doing heavy work. Historic Fourth Ward Park was built around a stormwater detention basin, turning a piece of necessary city infrastructure into 17 acres of paths, lawns, overlooks, play space, and water. Construction began in 2009 and the park opened in 2011, changing a flood-prone low point into one of Atlanta’s most persuasive public rooms.Walk the perimeter and watch how engineering disappears into the experience. The basin holds stormwater; terraces step down toward it; bridges and paths create long views; and Ponce City Market rises beyond the trees. The point is not that the infrastructure is hidden, but that it has been made legible and inviting. The park is free and generally open daily 6:00 AM–11:00 PM. It is ADA accessible. The splash pad is seasonal—typically May 1 through October 1, 10:00 AM–8:00 PM—and may close for maintenance or weather.
