Oakland Cemetery
Atlanta’s story is written into this ground. Established in 1850, Oakland grew from the city’s original public cemetery into a garden landscape where more than 70,000 lives share the record—famous names beside merchants, laborers, veterans, families, and people whose histories were long pushed to the margins. The paths, monuments, mature trees, and changing skyline make the city’s layers visible at once.Walk slowly and read beyond the grandest markers. The most revealing moments are often the contrasts: Victorian symbolism against modern towers, carefully restored plots beside evidence of whose memory received fewer resources, and a place of burial still functioning as a public park. The grounds are free and generally open daily 6:00 AM–8:00 PM. The Visitor Center and Museum Store are generally open 10:00 AM–5:00 PM; guided tours and special events may require separate tickets, and holiday closures can apply.
