Historic Rainbow Bridge

Two white concrete arches rise over a narrow deck, joined by vertical hangers so the structure feels sturdy and light. James Barney Marsh patented this Rainbow Arch design in 1912. Built in 1923, the 130-foot crossing linked Galena, Riverton, and Baxter Springs before the federal highway received the number 66.Route 66 crossed Brush Creek here until traffic shifted away in the 1960s. Two companion arches were dismantled in the early 1990s, but preservationists saved this one. National Register listing came in 1983; a newer crossing opened in 1992; local repairs followed in 1994; and a National Park Service grant supported more work in 2005.Visit in daylight. NPS guidance identifies the deck as walkable or drivable, but posted closures and conditions take priority. Never stop on the narrow bridge, block a travel path, climb the arches, or enter private land. Use only a lawful pullout when open and safe. No parking, tour, private access, or partner benefit is reserved.
