66 Drive-In Theatre
Twilight changes the scale of the place. The neon marquee flickers on beside Old 66, the white screen house rises 66 feet above a nine-acre rural field, and the back still announces its original 1949 message to highway traffic. The 66 Drive-In opened on September 22, 1949, just as postwar car travel and outdoor movies were becoming national rituals. Its waved-glass ticket booth, low concession/projection building, neon sign, and screen-house geometry carry Art Deco and Streamline Moderne ideas into a theater designed around the automobile.Drive through the gate and the historic fabric becomes part of the show. The original playground recalls the Baby Boom audience; rows of speaker poles survive even though sound now comes through FM radio; and the screen widened after 1953 to answer television with Cinemascope spectacle. The theatre went dark in 1985, then returned after a major restoration and reopened on April 18, 1998. Its National Register listing followed in 2003, preserving not a museum set but one of the few historically intact Route 66 drive-ins still doing its original job.The 2026 season is active, with the City of Carthage describing weekend double features from April through October. Gate and show times move with dusk, and individual programs can change the nights, prices, or policies, so check the theatre’s current posting before driving out. Recent 2026 programs have opened the gate around 7 p.m.; the ticket gate is currently cash-only, while the concession stand accepts cash and cards. Arrive early for a first-come space, bring an FM-capable radio, keep headlights and vehicle height considerate of neighbors, and treat the old speaker poles and playground as historic operating features rather than props to climb. This Pass does not reserve admission, parking, or a particular film.
