Joliet Area Historical Museum
Start among Joliet’s Route 66 exhibits, then head south into a 15.9-mile road built for a country at war. Heavy trucks serving the Kankakee and Elwood ordnance plants overwhelmed the older two-lane route, so the Federal Defense Highway Act funded a four-lane divided replacement between 1942 and 1945. Engineers laid gravel-and-stone subbase under 10 inches of Portland cement, turning Alternate 66 into a tougher, faster corridor. On today’s Illinois 53, look for the 1942 Union Pacific overpass and surviving concrete box culverts before the route reaches Wilmington—the utility of the highway is the story. The map pin is the Joliet Route 66 Welcome Center staging point; the museum is open daily 10 a.m.–4 p.m. with listed holiday closures. For the historic drive, begin at Patterson Road and follow Illinois 53 south to Illinois 102/Water Street in downtown Wilmington. IL 53 is an active, high-speed route: remain in the vehicle, never stop in a travel lane or on an unsafe shoulder, and check current IDOT conditions before departure.
