Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch
Hundreds of welded metal trees hold colored bottles, typewriters, signs, tools, bicycles, and fragments of other lives in a desert garden that changes with every gust of light. Elmer Long began assembling the ranch from family collections and roadside finds, turning discarded objects into bells, lenses, silhouettes, and memory. Since his death in 2019, his family and caretaker have kept the gates opening while repairing the work for a new generation. The official 2026 site describes about 200 trees and more than 1,000 bottles, but gives the only honest schedule: semi-regular, generally dawn to dusk, with closures whenever maintenance or guest safety requires them. A closed gate means closed—never climb or reach through it. There are no restrooms, food, or reliable services on site. Use the off-street parking around the fence when open; if parking beside National Trails Highway, pull completely off the pavement and cross only when traffic is clear. Carry water, watch for wind and broken glass, touch nothing, and leave every object where Elmer placed it.
