Roy's Motel & Cafe
Roy’s sign appears across the Mojave like a promise: fuel, shade, and a piece of 1950s Googie design where the desert road once carried a steady national stream. The business grew from a 1938 gas station under Roy and Velma Crowl and son-in-law Buster Burris, then added the angular motel office, boomerang sign, cafe, cabins, and round-the-clock service that supported Amboy at its peak. Interstate 40’s 1973 bypass nearly erased that economy. Preservation owner Albert Okura later reopened the pumps and shop, and the restored neon again marks the night. The official site currently describes a 24-hour gas station and gift shop, but the cafe and motel remain restoration projects rather than services to assume. Call ahead for current fuel, retail, neon, and restroom status; there are long distances between dependable services. Carry water, charge your phone, fuel early, and avoid the desert in extreme heat. Use the lot, remain outside closed buildings and cabins, and never enter nearby railroad or private property. The essential experience is the public forecourt and sign—a surviving beacon, not a promise that every historic amenity has returned.
