Hackberry General Store
A red Corvette, weathered pumps, rusting cars, Burma-Shave signs, and a rambling porch turn the Hackberry General Store into a roadside collage. After Interstate 40 bypassed this former mining settlement, artist and Route 66 traveler Bob Waldmire reopened the old Northside Grocery site in 1992 as an information stop and gathering place. Later owners expanded the collection, preserving not one frozen year but layers of highway memory—gasoline brands, tools, license plates, advertising, travelers’ notes, and vehicles slowly returning to the desert. Start outside, where the dependable experience remains visible even if the shop is closed; then enter only during posted business hours for souvenirs and the interior collection. This is private property and an active store, not an abandoned playground. Current hours vary by season and online sources disagree, so check the store or Kingman tourism before making a long detour. Purchases are optional. Park in the designated area, keep Arizona 66 clear, do not touch or climb on vehicles and artifacts, watch for heat and snakes, and ask before photographing people. The value is atmosphere with provenance: a bypassed place deliberately rebuilt as a memory station.
