Meteor Crater Observatory

A meteorite struck the Colorado Plateau about 50,000 years ago and left a bowl nearly three-quarters of a mile wide and roughly 570 feet deep. The scale only resolves at the rim: walk between the designated lookout points and use the museum’s distant markers to understand how small buildings and equipment appear on the crater floor. This is a privately operated, ticketed science attraction, not a national park and not an open backcountry site. General admission includes the Discovery Center and rim viewpoints; guided walks, 4D programs, and special floor tours depend on schedule, weather, staffing, age, and separate rules. The official site currently lists daily hours of 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., but high wind, lightning, heat, or winter conditions can close outdoor areas. Check alerts and ticket terms before taking the six-mile access road from I-40 Exit 233. Stay behind every railing, hold children close, secure hats and loose objects, and never attempt to descend outside an authorized tour. The payoff is perspective: one sudden event written across a desert landscape that Route 66 later carried millions of people past.
