TeePee Curios
A concrete teepee, a bright neon sign, and an old Gulf station have welcomed travelers to Tucumcari since the Mother Road’s postwar boom. The business began as a Route 66 filling station in the early 1940s; later owners added the tipi-shaped entrance and transformed the forecourt into Tee Pee Curios, one of the route’s longest-running souvenir stops. Start across the lot for the full composition—stucco canopy, pumps, neon, painted signs, and the circular shop entrance—then step inside if the store is open. This remains a working retail business, so the meaningful experience is preservation through everyday trade, not a staged museum display. Published hours vary among current directories and can change with season and staffing; call the shop or check the New Mexico Route 66 Association before planning an interior visit. Purchases are never required or implied. Use the lot, stay clear of Route 66 Boulevard, ask before photographing people or merchandise, and do not lean on the pumps or neon supports. At night the sign becomes the payoff; in daylight the adapted gas station tells the fuller story.
