The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery
The Big Texan turns a meal into full-scale roadside theater. R. J. “Bob” Lee opened the restaurant on Route 66 in 1960 and built its reputation around a 72-ounce steak challenge: finish the steak and required sides within one hour under the current rules, and the meal is free. The business moved beside Interstate 40 after the original road was bypassed, but its giant steer, yellow facade, longhorn limousines, dining hall, and gift shop preserve the exaggerated welcome of the classic highway. You do not need to attempt the challenge—or buy anything—to appreciate the exterior spectacle. The official site currently lists the dining room open daily 8:00 a.m.–10:30 p.m.; restaurant, motel, brewery, and event operations can keep different schedules. Check current hours, challenge rules, wait times, and dietary information before arriving. Use the marked lot, never approach moving courtesy vehicles for a photograph, and expect tour-bus crowds. This is Route 66’s appetite made architecture: loud, generous, commercially savvy, and impossible to miss.
