Oklahoma Route 66 Museum

Oklahoma tells the Mother Road decade by decade in this purpose-built museum at Clinton. Opened in 1995 and operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, the galleries move through road construction, Dust Bowl migration, wartime travel, motor courts, diners, roadside commerce, the interstate era, and the preservation movement that followed. Vehicles, signs, music, film, and recreated environments make the route feel like a changing system rather than one frozen decade. The museum is also the permanent home of the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame, and its 2026 centennial program added outdoor photo stand-ins and restored-sign work to the campus. The current official schedule is Monday–Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with published state-holiday closures; admission is ticketed and special exhibits can change. Verify the Oklahoma Historical Society calendar before arrival, allow at least an hour, respect artifact and photography rules, and never assume an event or guided program is included. The giant Route 66 shield outside delivers the photograph; inside, Oklahoma supplies the historical backbone.
