Blue Whale of Catoosa

A bright blue whale rises from a farm pond beside Route 66 because Hugh Davis wanted to give his family an unforgettable place to play. Working with friend Harold Thomas, Davis spent about two years welding the frame and applying hand-mixed cement until the smiling structure stretched roughly 80 feet long and 20 feet high. The private swimming hole eventually welcomed travelers, closed after the Davis family retired, and later returned as a preserved roadside park. Walk the pond edge for the classic profile, climb only where current signs allow, and notice the small viewing chamber inside the whale’s head. Swimming is no longer part of the experience. Oklahoma’s official tourism listing currently describes free admission and daily daylight access, with seasonal restrooms; events, maintenance, weather, and pond conditions can change what is open. Use the marked entrance and parking, supervise children near water and steps, never fish or enter restricted areas unless posted rules expressly allow it, and leave the site cleaner than you found it. The whale’s appeal is simple and durable: one family’s handmade surprise became everybody’s landmark.
