Standard Oil of Illinois Gas Station
One small building shows how early gas stations learned to look like home. Contractor Patrick O’Donnell built Odell’s station in 1932 from a 1916 Standard Oil of Ohio “house with canopy” design, meant to make a new kind of roadside business feel familiar. Walk beneath the canopy, study the old pump and swinging sign, then compare the cottage-like office with the two-bay garage added in the late 1940s as repair work became essential. The station sold gasoline into the 1960s, worked as an auto-body shop until the late 1970s, and then slipped toward demolition. Odell, preservation partners, and the National Park Service restored it as a village welcome center. The current Illinois tourism listing offers tours daily from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. The payoff is scale: this modest stop makes the enormous roadside economy of Route 66 feel personal. Verify hours before visiting.
