Meramec Caverns
Route 66 advertising once painted the name Meramec Caverns on barns across America; the destination at the end of that promise is a vast Ozark show cave beside the Meramec River. Guided tours cover about 1¼ miles of lighted walkways in roughly 80 minutes, passing layered mineral formations and the delicate “Wine Table.” The cave also carries generations of Jesse James stories, but treat folklore and documented evidence as different things—the geology is the certain spectacle. Tours are ticketed, the interior stays near 58°F, and natural ramps, narrow passages, grooves, and a flight of stairs make the standard route inaccessible to wheelchairs and strollers. The official 2026 schedule changes repeatedly by season and includes a winter closure, November and December call-ahead periods, and departures that begin around opening time. Verify current hours, ticket prices, weather, river conditions, and any closures before leaving I-44. Wear stable shoes, follow the ranger, touch nothing, and never assume add-on attractions are operating. The indispensable photograph is above ground; the real payoff waits below it.
