Ted Drewes Frozen Custard
The walk-up windows at Ted Drewes turn a frozen dessert into a Route 66 ritual. Ted Drewes Sr. began selling frozen custard in 1929, and the family opened this Chippewa stand on the Mother Road in 1941. Its crowded menu boards, glowing sign, and stream of customers still feel less like a themed attraction than a neighborhood institution that travelers discovered and adopted. Order a “concrete”—custard blended thick enough to be handed over upside down—then step aside so the next order can move. The official site currently lists the Chippewa location at 6726 Chippewa, open daily 11:00 a.m.–10:30 p.m., but hours can change seasonally; the nearby gift shop and history display keep a separate schedule. Purchases, seating, and uninterrupted photographs are never implied. Check current hours and allergen information, use the marked lot or lawful street parking, and expect lines on warm evenings. This is living roadside culture: a 1941 Route 66 stop still doing its original job.
