Cozy Dog Drive In

A hot dog on a stick became a Route 66 institution here. Ed Waldmire Jr. began selling his batter-coated “Cozy Dog” in Springfield in 1946 after developing a rack that let cooks fry several evenly at once. The family’s stands moved as the road and business changed; today the red-roofed South Sixth Street restaurant keeps the recipe, hand-painted signs, road maps, and Waldmire art in public view. Order at the counter, then look past the meal to the walls: this is a working family restaurant that also functions as an informal archive of Illinois Route 66. The Cozy Dog has relatives and rival origin stories across American food history, so the more honest claim is the one the place can prove—a distinctive Springfield recipe and production method that travelers have followed for generations. This remains an active restaurant, not a museum with guaranteed exhibit access. Check the official site or call for current hours before arriving, use customer parking, keep the counter moving when busy, and never assume a meal, tour, or reserved seat.
