Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum
Illinois keeps its Mother Road memory in one downtown Pontiac building. The Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame & Museum gathers signs, photographs, maps, roadside artifacts, and the work of artist and traveler Bob Waldmire, whose vehicles turned the highway itself into a studio. Begin inside with the people and businesses inducted into the Hall of Fame, then step behind the building for the enormous painted Route 66 shield—one of the corridor’s essential centennial photographs. The museum is donation-supported and currently opens seven days a week: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. from April through October and 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. from November through March, with listed holiday closures. The Bob Waldmire bus has more limited access, so do not assume it will be open during every visit. Verify the museum’s current schedule before driving to Pontiac, respect artifact barriers, and allow time for the surrounding downtown murals. This is not a generic local-history stop; it is Illinois Route 66’s own institutional memory.
