Gemini Giant
The Gemini Giant has a new home—and the move is now part of his Route 66 story. The 30-foot fiberglass figure first rose beside Wilmington’s Launching Pad in 1965, recasting a mass-produced “Muffler Man” as a Space Age traveler with a silver helmet, green flight suit, and rocket in hand. When the closed restaurant property changed hands, the Joliet Area Historical Museum purchased the statue in 2024, restored it, and returned it to Wilmington. Since November 2024, the giant has stood at the entrance to South Island Park at 201 Bridge Street, still close to the historic route and freely visible for photographs. The gallery image records the figure at its original Launching Pad setting; follow this Hop’s live pin to the current park location. Use the designated park approach and lawful parking, keep Route 53 and the entrance clear, respect any barriers, and check the City of Wilmington tourism page for current park or event notices. The payoff is more than a roadside portrait: it is a local icon whose community chose preservation over disappearance.
