Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket
The city gives way to roadside architecture here. Dell Rhea’s began in the 1930s as a lunch counter attached to a service station; the low brick building beside the original site opened in 1946, just as postwar travel was about to surge. Stand back for the long window line and restored neon sign. In the 1950s, the flat roof even became advertising: the owner flooded it in winter and hired skaters to perform above the road. Then go inside for the working version of the story. Interstate 55 pulled traffic away in 1962, but Dell Rhea bought the restaurant the following year and rebuilt its audience. New ownership in 2019 pledged to continue the original recipe and homestyle setting. The official site currently lists daily hours of 11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. This is endurance served as dinner—a business built for one road, bypassed by another, and still welcoming travelers. Check hours before the drive.
