Durlin Hotel

A hotel became a bridge between two booms. Named for builder John Durlin, this is Mohave County’s only surviving historic two-story adobe building. Oatman surged after major gold discoveries in 1908 and 1915, filling the hotel with miners, merchants, and travelers before the United Eastern mine closed in 1924 and federal wartime policy shut the remaining local mines in 1941.Route 66 gave the building another audience. From 1926 to 1952 the highway ran directly through Oatman, letting restaurants, shops, and lodging replace part of the mining economy. The interstate bypassed town in the early 1950s and the population collapsed, but the hotel survived; renamed the Oatman Hotel in the late 1960s, it no longer offers overnight rooms. Its first floor now operates as a restaurant and saloon, upper-floor museum access is separate and condition-dependent, and the building’s 1983 National Register listing recognizes a real adaptive history beneath the ghost stories and road lore.The current Google provider schedule lists Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; recheck the same day because restaurant, kitchen, bar, museum, event, and holiday access can differ. Oatman’s Main Street is an active roadway shared with pedestrians and free-roaming burros. Drive slowly, use only legal parking, keep the lane and entrances clear, and follow current closures and fire/weather guidance.
