Nob Hill Shopping Center
Park where Albuquerque learned to shop by car. In 1946, developer D. K. B. Sellers and architect Louis Hesselden opened New Mexico’s first drive-in shopping center at what many residents thought was the far edge of town. Its U-shaped plan turned a parking court toward Route 66, while white stucco, bands of tile, corner towers, plate-glass storefronts, and architectural neon made ordinary errands feel unmistakably modern. That layout marks a city changing scale. Earlier Central Avenue shops formed a pedestrian street wall; Nob Hill pushed commerce outward and designed the whole block around short automobile trips, separately owned businesses, and shared parking. The gamble worked, helped establish Nob Hill as a commercial district, and survived later enclosed-mall competition. Renovated in the early 1980s and National Register-listed in 1994, the center now operates as Nob Hill Business Center with independent shops, food, and services inside the historic shell.Treat this as a living shopping-and-dining stop, not a museum with one admission schedule. Individual tenants keep their own hours, so check the current directory before choosing a shop or meal; the property-management office’s Monday–Friday hours are not universal visitor hours. The official center site documents two hours of free guest parking behind the property on the south side of Silver between Carlisle and Amherst for center patrons. Use marked crossings on busy Central, respect customer-only parking and closed storefronts, and enjoy the neon after dark only while the center and your chosen business are open.
