Historic Route 66 Terminus — Lincoln & Olympic

The official road ends at an ordinary city intersection. Route 66’s 1926 western terminus sat in downtown Los Angeles; in 1936 the highway was extended to Santa Monica so it could meet another federal route at Lincoln and Olympic boulevards. That connection—not an ocean view—made this the historic western endpoint. Its plainness is part of the story. The famous pier sign and the marker near Ocean Avenue became more satisfying photographs, but they are later commemorative places. The Santa Monica Conservancy distinguishes those symbolic finishes from Lincoln and Olympic, where the numbered highway actually stopped. The Builder’s exact Google entity uses “Official End of Route 66 Sign” at this Lincoln Boulevard location; the Hop title and copy preserve the more important intersection history.Treat this as a map-and-streetscape chapter, not a roadside pull-off. Lincoln, Olympic, and the I-10 approaches carry active urban traffic. Use a legal nearby parking space and public sidewalk, cross only with signals, never stand in a median or travel lane, and do not photograph while driving. Signage, construction, and safe pedestrian approaches can change; the historical endpoint remains the intersection even if no celebratory marker is visible.
