La Posada Historic District
Mary Colter began this hotel by inventing its past.To design La Posada, she imagined an early-1800s Spanish rancho that had aged into a hotel, then used that fictional history to guide the building's local materials, faux-adobe walls, arcades, fireplaces, gardens, and intimate rooms. That backstory is design—not evidence that a Spanish don actually lived here—and it is part of what makes the place so revealing. Opened in 1930 as the last great Fred Harvey railroad hotel, La Posada joined the Santa Fe Railway's hospitality system between Chicago and Los Angeles. Its original ceremonial entrance faced the tracks; Route 66 ran behind the building, at a time when the railroad still expected most guests to arrive by train. The road helped change that logic. Through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, more travelers chose cars and modest roadside lodging, while La Posada briefly surged with wartime rail traffic—its grounds and kitchens feeding troops moving through Winslow. The hotel closed by the end of the 1950s. Santa Fe converted the building into offices, adding partitions and lower ceilings, and four decades of alteration and neglect nearly erased Colter's work. National Register listing followed in 1992; new owners bought the property in 1997 and began the restoration that continues today. Guest rooms, gardens, art, dining, and the depot museum give the complex another life without pretending the interruptions never happened.Visit this as a working hotel and historic district, not an unrestricted monument. Start at the Route 66 entrance, notice how the north side became the public face after automobile travel took over, and use La Posada's published garden walk to compare Colter's unrealized 1929 plan with the restored Sunken Garden, cottonwood grove, and native-plant spaces. Confirm current hotel, restaurant, museum, and garden access before arriving; each operates on its own terms. Keep guest rooms, residences, event spaces, work areas, and closed garden zones private, stay off the railroad tracks, and do not assume a room, table, tour, museum visit, parking space, or event admission without the required reservation or fee.
