El Garces
A Greek temple appears at the desert’s edge. Opened in 1908 after Needles’ earlier Santa Fe depot burned, El Garces paired a freight and passenger station with a hotel and restaurant. Architect Francis S. Wilson gave the long white building Tuscan columns, open-air loggias, ornamental ceilings, and a symmetrical Classical Revival face—a startlingly formal welcome after the Mojave.Fred Harvey hospitality made the architecture matter. Travelers arriving by rail, the National Old Trails Highway, and later Route 66 found linen, silver, fresh flowers, and a lunchroom built around two horseshoe counters for 140 guests. Harvey Girls remembered an El Garces assignment as one of the company’s prizes, while Needles residents used the rooms for dinners, banquets, and civic occasions. The Harvey House closed in 1949, railroad offices left in 1988, and local preservation saved the threatened building. The city purchased it in 1999; the restored complex reopened as an intermodal facility in 2014 and gained an Amtrak waiting room in 2016. Treat it as an active transportation landmark, not a restored hotel stay: use the public approach, keep clear of tracks and operations, and confirm current interior or event access before relying on entry.
