McLean Commercial Historic District
McLean moved from rail town to road town almost overnight. Route 66 arrived in 1927 and pulled commerce toward Main, First, and Railroad streets; at the highway’s peak, 22 auto-related businesses worked here, and roughly three quarters were service stations. The restored cottage-like Phillips station at 218 West First—opened in 1929 as the company’s first Texas station—makes that economic turn visible. The district still layers the services a long-distance driver once needed: storefronts, repair bays, a theater, cafés, lodging, and civic rooms. McLean fought the interstate bypass longer than any other Texas Route 66 town, but I-40 finally diverted traffic. The very slowdown that hurt the local economy also left an unusually legible midcentury streetscape, listed on the National Register in 2004. This Hop covers a working public district, not every building within it. Walk or drive only on public streets and sidewalks, use legal parking, and respect operating businesses, homes, fences, and posted restrictions. Individual museums and shops keep their own hours; confirm directly before relying on entry. Do not enter closed structures, stage in the roadway, or treat the exterior stop as a promise of tours, food, lodging, or partner benefits.
