Lake Overholser Bridge
For two years, this crossing was a ferry. After the floods of 1923 washed out bridges along the old Postal Road, travelers crossed the North Canadian River by boat until this 748-foot bridge opened in August 1925. Its 20-foot roadway was already narrow when Route 66 claimed the crossing the next year. The bridge is an unusual procession of Parker through trusses and pony trusses—steel geometry that carried vacationers, migrants, freight trucks, and nearly every other kind of road story west. A wider bridge shifted through traffic north in 1958, but the original survived as a local crossing. Closed for restoration in 2008, it returned to motor traffic in October 2011 and remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is an active, narrow bridge, not a roadside pullout. Drive across only when it is posted open, keep moving, and obey the 12-foot-4-inch clearance plus any vehicle, weight, lane, or closure controls. Do not stop on the bridge or photograph while driving. Lake access, trails, parking, and amenities are at separate facilities and are not guaranteed at the bridge itself.
