Rock Cafe
The walls tell you how improvised the first years were. Roy Rives spent three years turning a modest roadside plan into the Rock Cafe, at times hiring Stroud high-school students and moving concrete for the foundation by wheelbarrow. Local tradition says the irregular, multicolored “Giraffe” sandstone cost only five dollars because it was leftover from nearby Route 66 work. When the cafe finally opened in August 1939, thrift had become architecture: a sturdy Craftsman-influenced room built to serve both townspeople and an expanding national road. The highway kept rewriting the business. During World War II, Greyhound buses delivered soldiers traveling to and from leave; after the war, the cafe ran around the clock and added its sharp modern neon sign. Decommissioning did not finish it, nor did Stroud’s devastating 1999 tornado. A 2001 National Register listing and preservation grant supported a deep rehabilitation, only for a 2008 fire to leave four stone walls and the heavy Wolfe grill known as Betsy. The cafe rebuilt again and reopened in 2009, with the historic room, counter, booths, roof, stone, and sign returned to working life rather than frozen as scenery. This is an active restaurant, so come as a customer and let staff manage seating, photography, and busy periods.
