Route 66, Chicago to the Pacific

The highway was decommissioned. The journey survived.Route 66 follows the Mother Road through the places that explain how the journey worked: street grids and roadbeds, bridges and filling stations, cafés and motels, theaters, commercial blocks, museums, and the landscapes between them. For the road’s 100th anniversary, this collection brings together 66 researched stops across all eight states. The collection is designed for chapters, not a sprint. Start in Chicago, spend a weekend with one state's corridor, or return over years as the road changes. Famous neon and roadside icons appear beside quieter structures whose stories reveal migration, entrepreneurship, segregation and safer-travel networks, engineering, preservation, and the towns reshaped when traffic moved elsewhere. Each Hop earns its place through a distinct surviving contribution rather than fame alone.Use this as a chaptered route companion, not turn-by-turn navigation. Historic alignments can diverge from modern highways; some buildings are active businesses, some are museums, and others are exterior-only landmarks. Check current hours, access, weather, fuel, water, road conditions, and local guidance before each leg. Never trespass, stop on an unsafe shoulder, or assume a historic property is open. In Santa Monica, the historic endpoint at Lincoln and Olympic and the symbolic End of the Trail at the pier are distinct final chapters. The point is to travel attentively—and let the complete route unfold one honest stop at a time.
