Boca Negra Canyon
Begin where the basalt already carries a record.Petroglyph National Monument protects more than 25,000 images, and the National Park Service estimates that about 90 percent were made by ancestors of today’s Pueblo people. Many date from roughly 1300 through the late 1600s, while some are far older and some were made by early Spanish settlers. Boca Negra’s three short trails place about one hundred images within a 70-acre canyon, but the meaning of the place is larger than an image count: the monument describes this as a sacred cultural landscape.Walk slowly, stay on the marked trail, and look without touching, tracing, chalking, climbing, or removing anything. Combined walking time is about one hour, but Mesa Point is strenuous and the Macaw and Cliff Base trails are moderate despite their short lengths. The area is free, with restrooms, shade, water, and an accessible viewing scope; last entry at 16:00 is strictly enforced. The trails are not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible, and heat, loose rock, steep grades, exposed sun, lightning, and severe weather are real.
